TATA IPL 2024: Gill Highlights 'Impact Player' Rule with 12th Double Ton
Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill acknowledged that the Impact Player can influence matches to be high-scoring, as they offer an added advantage for batters to maintain their aggressive approach against bowlers. This came after GT narrowly lost to Delhi Capitals (DC) by just four runs in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The ongoing IPL season saw its 12th 200-plus score as Delhi Capitals piled on 224/4 and Gujarat Titans managed only 220/8 in reply. “I think impact player has a bit of a role (in making the matches high scoring), even if you lose extra wickets, the extra cushion is there for the batters to keep going and it gives the license for the batters to keep going till the end”, Gill said after GT’s four-run loss.
Despite a promising start, GT's bowlers permitted DC to stage a comeback, highlighted by Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel's partnership of 113 runs. Gill expressed his team's culpability in conceding a few additional runs during this phase. “At one stage we thought we will be able to restrict them around 200-210. We gave away a few extra runs in the last couple of overs”, Gill said.
“But the good thing about chasing is that you know what you are chasing. It’s a small ground, and it’s chaseable. Execution becomes very important [for bowlers]. If there’s nothing in the wicket for the bowlers, then you have to execute your plans – or your yorkers”.
Shubman Gill also said it was disappointing to lose such a close game. “I think we played some really good cricket, It was disappointing to lose in the end, but great character was shown by everyone. Great fight till the end and we never thought we were out of the game at any point”, the GT skipper said. “When you’re chasing 224, there’s no point in talking about plans; just go out and score runs”, he added.
